Let’s get something straight: using AI isn’t ethically neutral

There’s an ethical blind spot developing in cybersecurity. Everyone wants to use AI, but few stop to ask how and whether they should. That needs to change.

Start with data. Are you feeding these models confidential incident reports? Internal communications? Case notes? If you’re using a third-party tool, even just for drafting reports or classifying alerts, you may be exposing sensitive organizational data without realizing it. Many of these platforms store inputs. Some train on them. Some build a profile on the user. If you haven’t had legal sign-off, stop.

Then there’s the content itself. A language model might write a great incident summary but is it accurate? Did it hallucinate a source? Is the tone consistent with your brand? Is it pulling from someone else’s copyrighted content? Don’t assume the output is safe just because it’s in a dashboard. It’s still your name on the report.

Governance matters. That means policies. It means transparency about what tools are used where. It means knowing when a human must review before action is taken. It means not cutting corners because the model seems confident.

Ethics also means not lying about what your systems can do. Don’t call it AI if it’s just rules. Don’t let your marketing write checks your tech can’t cash. Security is about trust and once that’s gone, it’s hard to get back.

AI is not exempt from the principles of good cybersecurity. It still needs risk assessment, audit, and accountability. And ultimately, it needs humans to guide how it’s used.

Let’s get something straight: using AI isn’t ethically neutral. Just because the tool is available doesn’t mean it’s appropriate. And in cybersecurity (where trust, confidentiality, and accuracy are foundational) we can’t afford to be sloppy.

First off, let’s talk data. AI tools, especially generative ones, are trained on significant amounts of data. Some sources are licensed, some scraped, and some from who-knows-where. When you paste confidential information into a third-party chat interface, you may be giving that vendor your internal security strategy, incident response processes, or even customer data. And you likely don’t realize how long that information lives or how it may be used to improve the model.

This isn’t paranoia. It’s basic hygiene. Unless your organization has approved use of a specific tool (ideally one that runs in a private environment, with no data retention) you should assume that anything you enter could resurface later. That alone should give you pause.

Then there’s output. Generative systems can fabricate. They can plagiarize. They can misrepresent the facts with confidence. If you’re using these tools to write reports or summaries, you need human review. The human review is not just for accuracy, but to ensure the tone matches your brand, the conclusions are defensible, and the content isn’t just regurgitated from a questionable source.

And finally, there’s profiling. Every time you interact with a hosted LLM, it’s capturing signals about your behavior. Preferences, interests, frequency of use. That data has value whether to improve the product or to sell you more of it later. So you’re not just a user, you’re training it.

Here’s the ethical baseline:

  • Don’t enter sensitive or proprietary data unless your organization has approved it.
  • Don’t assume the AI is right. Verify everything.
  • Don’t assume it’s private. Check the terms.
  • Don’t use it as a shortcut for things that require human judgment or legal accuracy.

There’s also a marketing ethics angle: if your product doesn’t use real machine learning, don’t call it AI. If you’re layering basic automation or if-then logic on top of an old workflow, don’t pretend it’s cutting-edge intelligence. That kind of exaggeration misleads buyers and contributes to the overhype spiral we’re stuck in.

AI can be used ethically in security but only when we treat it with the same caution and scrutiny we apply to any new attack surface.

AI has found its way into nearly every corner of cybersecurity. Vendors pitch it as a game-changer. Executives want it in their roadmaps. Analysts are expected to use it or, at least, not fall behind those who do. But lost in the noise is a more important discussion: what does ethical use of AI actually look like? It’s not enough to have a powerful tool. If you don’t understand the risks that come with it, you’re not doing security. You’re just experimenting with production data.

Let’s start with the elephant in the room: most security teams are using generative AI without a formal policy in place. Tools like ChatGPT, Copilot, and Gemini get pulled into workflows because they’re convenient. You copy and paste an alert, ask for help summarizing logs, maybe even draft an executive brief. It’s fast, efficient, and easy to justify when you’re underwater with tickets. But where did the input go? Who owns the result? Was that alert trace confidential? If you can’t answer those questions, you’ve already crossed a line.

Confidentiality isn’t optional in security work. Feeding a proprietary incident narrative or internal documentation into a public AI system creates risk. Especially when that data might be stored, logged, or used to train future models. Some vendors offer enterprise guarantees, but unless your organization has done due diligence and explicitly approved those tools, you shouldn’t be using them. Convenience is not a license to compromise.

There’s also the issue of accuracy. Generative systems are confident liars. They write in authoritative tones, even when they get the facts wrong. They’ll fabricate citations, invent technical terminology, and hallucinate entire configurations. In a field like cybersecurity where precision matters, this isn’t a small risk. It’s a liability. If you’re using these tools to produce content that others rely on (e.g. playbooks, briefings, client guidance) then every incorrect sentence erodes trust.

Then there’s tone. Security professionals spend years learning how to write and speak in ways that match their organization’s culture. Reports aren’t just data dumps. They’re crafted with nuance for the audience. AI-generated content often misses that completely. It’s either too casual, too technical, or weirdly robotic. You can’t assume that what it produces will reflect how your organization wants to be perceived. And once content leaves your hands, it reflects on your brand, your professionalism, and your credibility.

Another overlooked issue is profiling. Many AI tools learn based on your interactions. Every prompt, correction, or usage pattern adds to the shadow profile of you. That data may be used to improve models, target future functionality, or even drive business decisions. If you’re using these tools without an understanding of how your inputs are stored or evaluated, you’re participating in a feedback loop that might not serve your interests.

So what does ethical AI use look like in a cybersecurity context?

First, get explicit permission before using confidential data in any AI system. That means written approval from leadership, legal, or compliance and not a casual conversation. Second, treat generative output as a rough draft. Never rely on it as a final product without human review. Third, assume anything you type may be stored, unless the system clearly tells you otherwise. And fourth, train your team to recognize that not all AI output is created equal. Tone, accuracy, and risk all vary depending on the context and the tool.

Ethical use is also about mindset. Right now, everyone wants to be seen as early adopters. The pressure to “do AI” is intense. You see it in sales pitches, job postings, even compliance frameworks. The fear is that if you’re not using it, you’re behind. But the truth is that most organizations are still figuring out the basics. There’s no shame in moving slower if it means making better decisions. Blind adoption isn’t progress. It’s negligence dressed as innovation.

Rational use of AI means you know why you’re using it, what problem it solves, and what risks it introduces. It means humans still own the outcome. Automation and augmentation are fine. Replacing judgment, interpretation, and accountability is not.

Security is about trust. If AI breaks that trust by leaking data, lying confidently, or misrepresenting your organization then it stops being an asset. It becomes a threat of your own making.

You can use AI ethically in security, but only if you’re honest about what it is, what it isn’t, and how it needs to be governed. Don’t let urgency override responsibility.
